Librarians and the public join together in a beat poetry read-a-thon. Fifty-five years after Allen Ginsberg's first public reading of 'Howl' – considered one of the greatest poems of the Beat Generation – Aucklanders get together to read aloud from the beat poets over a glass of wine.
Bring some of your favourites to read. Listening only also permitted!
Originally written by Ginsberg as a performance piece, 'Howl' was deemed obscene and was the subject of a long trial in the late 1950s after its publication by poet and activist, Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Howl is also the name of a new film starring James Franco (as Ginsberg), Mary-Louise Parker and Jon Hamm.
Whare Wānanga, level 2.
