This exhibition provides a unique insight into life in New Zealand during WWII, when thousands of US Marines landed on the docks of Wellington. Sent to protect an ally and a friend from the threat of invasion, they would leave a lasting impression that can be felt to this day.

A Friend in Need commemorates a unique time in New Zealand’s history when local families and communities took these young Americans into their lives and provided them with warm and lasting memories before facing the horrors of war. For many it would be their last place of peace.

With personal stories, photos, artefacts and unique archival film footage, this exhibition is about people, bittersweet stories of kindness, friendship and loss.

I have lived in New Zealand for almost forty years. I am a Scot by birth.
My family survived the blitz as my father survived the arctic convoys to Russia.
Without the American involvement in WW2 the allies would surely have been defeated and New Zealand would just as surely have been invaded by the Japanese armies.
It saddens me that there is such a high level of anti American feeling in our country.
I am pleased to see that Te Papa recognizes the massive sacrifice made by the American people on our behalf.
As we remember our fallen servicemen and women, we should also take time out to remember the contribution of our American friends and allies - LEST WE FORGET!
