Gerald Barnett, the first professional director of Mahara Gallery from 2001-2006, has returned to Mahara from Sydney to organise an exhibition of his own drawings and watercolours spanning twenty years’ work, which opens on Saturday 28 August at 5pm.
Barnett has been active as a writer and curator, working for the National Art Gallery, the Colin McCahon Trust and the Real Art Roadshow. In 2007, he moved to Australia to concentrate on his art.
He says ‘As a curator, you are constantly thinking about presenting and promoting other people’s work. It has taken me three years since leaving the gallery to really settle back into focusing on my own work.’
Barnett has painted all his life, and has been working in watercolour since the early 1970s. His first solo exhibition was in 1979 with the Jan Dowse Gallery. Apart from the decade 1985 to 1995, when he showed with Aberhart North Gallery in Auckland, he has not been a regular exhibitor.
Curator and writer Jill Trevelyan says ‘The earliest works in this show were painted in the 1990s, when watercolour was seriously unfashionable in the contemporary art world. Today, it’s back in vogue. But Gerald has always made art primarily for his own pleasure and satisfaction. For him, the quest to create something of beauty remains relevant, meaningful, and contemporary.
The opening event for all four shows is Saturday 28 August at 5pm, which will include a short art performance by Anna-Marie O’Brien. All are welcome and entry is free.
Gallerist Mary-Jane Duffy will introduce Anna-Marie O’Brien and Gary Freemantle’s shows and Mahara Gallery Director Janet Bayly will introduce Gerald Barnett and Nikolai Kokx’s shows. All the artists will be attending the exhibition opening.
