Gary Freemantle painted in his studio and ran ‘One Eye Gallery’ upstairs in the Holtom’s Building in Paekakariki until moving to Shannon two years ago. He was inspired in both his materials and subject matter by the major Paekakariki flood of 2003, and this flood-mud is the material of the new landscapes in his show, Wild / Life. ‘I lived under the Paekakariki Hill for 11 years and never had the distance to have it influence my work. It is coming through in my work only now. I am painting the hill with the very material it consists of.’

‘Underlying this new show is the themes of destruction and renewal: the creative act as counterfoil to an event that caused quite a bit of damage. This was a catalytic event for my work as I have continued to work with mud and oxides sourced from around the country.’ Anna-Marie O’Brien and Gary Freemantle are represented by Mary Newton Gallery.

The opening event for all four shows is Saturday 28 August at 5pm, which will include a short art performance by Anna-Marie O’Brien. All are welcome and entry is free.

Gallerist Mary-Jane Duffy will introduce Anna-Marie O’Brien and Gary Freemantle’s shows and Mahara Gallery Director Janet Bayly will introduce Gerald Barnett and Nikolai Kokx’s shows. All the artists will be attending the exhibition opening.
