Imagine taking 4 teams of beginners in the morning and by the end of the day putting on an improvised comedy show for a theatre of paying customers.
Sounds crazy? Sounds impossible? Well its not!
For the past few years groups of people have been coming to the Plaza Theatre in Putaruru and doing just that – with amazing results.
Under the expert tuition of Wellington Improv Comedy performer Greg Ellis provides people from all walks of life – from parents to schoolkids – have been learning the ropes of how to improvise during the day and then wowing an audience in the evening in a competition to find out who are the regions funniest people.
Improv Comedy is the art of making up funny scenes on the spot with no rehearsal and no script. If it sounds familiar it is. People have been tuning in to “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on the TV and going to see live Theatresports performances for over 2 decades but what makes this show and workshops so special is the spirit of the performers. Not seasoned professionals but gutsy newcomers who master their nerves and put the day’s training into effect with amazing and hilarious results. When you combine these raw materials with an improv performer who has been making audiences laugh all around the country since 1990 and you have the recipe for a once in a lifetime experience – created every year at the Plaza!
