A group exhibition of limited edition T-shirts and prints that challenge our attitudes to 'madness.'
In May this year Joshua Gerbault and his crew from Te Karanga Community Gallery won a Rethink Grant to run an art competition and exhibition with a twist.
An invitation to enter was sent to artists around the country, asking them to create a black-and-white image that would get people redefining their perception of mental ‘illness’. The best ten designs would be screen-printed by hand onto limited edition T-shirts for an exhibition at Te Karanga in late August and included in a second-edition, commercial run to be released just in time for Mental Health Awareness Week in early October.
Artists were briefed on the Rethink Grant’s destigmatisation mission and asked to consider the ethos, themes and stigmas that surround mental distress and madness when submitting images.
Artistic entries were open until the end of July and the winners are:
• Alex Bartleet
• Pip Hartley
• Lucy Taggart
• Eccehobo
• Alex Chalmers
• Max Woodward
• Jodine Butler
• Ina Kuhfuss
• Rebbecca Bush
• Macula
The winning images are at times funny and at others intelligent, thought-provoking or even quizzical; but they always promote dialogue, and that’s what the crew was looking for. The Like Minds, Like Mine team at Mind and Body Consultants already have their favourites picked out and the rest of the office can’t decide between antelopes or phrenology or the portrait or the poetry or… the list goes on.
Anyone else wanting to take a look will need to come on down to Rethink: Ethosphere at Te Karanga Gallery, between August 19th and September 1st. Te Karanga can be found upstairs at 208 Karangahape Road, Auckland City.
Gerbault says “We have chosen to present the show in the form of T-shirts and prints because the T-shirt represents … a global culture that is inclusive of all ages, sexes, ethnicities, abilities and socio-cultural backgrounds. In other words anyone can wear a t shirt!”
