Amnesty International Christchurch brings you Liberave, a graffiti party dedicated to raise funds and awareness for the freedom of expression in Myanmar. Some info below:

What is Amnesty International?
Amnesty International is a worldwide non-profit human rights organisation. Amnesty International is mainly focused on widespread human rights injustices perpetrated by governments or warring political factions within a country. There are seven main areas of human rights Amnesty International focuses on. These are Rights of Prisoners of Conscience, Rights of Refugees, Women's Rights, Children's Rights, Ending of Torture, Abolition of the Death Penalty and the Protection of Human Dignity. Amnesty International raises money to fund their campaigns for human rights. They campaign by putting pressure on local and international governments to change things using media, non-violent protests and individual letter writing and activism.

What is happening in Myanmar?
This year, Myanmar will hold its first election in 20 years. The military government in Myanmar has consistently repressed ethnic minority political opponents and activists students. They have already used intimidation, arbitrary detention and arrests, unfair trials, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and violations of freedom of assembly, association, expression and religion to silence the voices of the ethnic minority people.

Amnesty fears that the coming elections will give the government new resolve to crackdown on political dissent among the minority peoples. Political opponents and activists are already at risk of grave human rights violations and non-violent student activists are often at the forefront of political activism. There are already over 21,000 Prisoners of Conscience in Myanmar.

Our Goals:
Our goals are to raise as much awareness as possible in the people of Christchurch about this current situation and to open people's eyes to events around the world, as well as raising as much money as possible to help fund the campaign and the help for those people in need. We hope to have a minimum of 300 people attend the event and raise at least $8,000 from it. This money will be used to cover the expenses for the event and the remaining money will go straight to Amnesty International.
