Presented by Susan Williamson. Hear about the magic and diversity which, for centuries, have drawn travellers to Croatia, a melting pot of cultural influences including Roman, Venetian, Turkish, Hungarian and Austrian; and to the historic Adriatic seaport of Trieste.
Croatia is renowned for its magnificent coastline, monuments and walls. This is reportedly where film stars discreetly arrange to purchase one of its 1100+ islands. The rebuilding of Dubrovnik, both after an earthquake in 1667 and the relentless heavy bombing by Yugoslav troops in 1991, means people are once again free to enjoy this Croatian city’s splendour.
The largest seaport on the Adriatic Sea, Trieste is a bridge between the Mediterranean world and Central Europe. It has a famous literary history, having been home at various times to authors such as James Joyce, Rainer Maria Rilke and Italo Svevo. Modern Trieste offers fabulous shops, picturesque walks and interesting galleries.
