Polly Sussex presents her current research, "The Cinderella of the String Family: The Viola da Gamba, its History and Repertoire."
This event is part of the Music Seminar Series: a series of presentations highlighting current research at the School of Music.
Abstract:
A glimpse of the history of the viola da gamba, and the rich repertoire of music written for the instrument. Some short examples will also be played to illustrate the talk.
Biography:
After completing her PhD on the cello sonatas of Luigi Boccherini at Otago University, Polly Sussex moved to perform exclusively on original instruments rather than modern ones.
Polly now specialises in baroque cello and viola da gamba. During 2007-2009, she spent 18 months furthering her studies of viola da gamba in Northern Germany and Switzerland at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Polly is an artist teacher at The University of Auckland’s School of Music, and continues to perform throughout New Zealand. She is currently researching early repertoire for the baroque cello, and will soon publish an article detailing the single seventeenth century viola da gamba to be held in a New Zealand Museum - the Cole Viol at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
