Mário Carreira presents his current research, "The Romantic Guitar (Sor, Giuliani and Contemporaries): An Illustrated Exploration of the Development of the Guitar and its Playing Technique from the Late 18th Century to c.1840."
This event is part of the Music Seminar Series: a series of presentations highlighting current research at the School of Music.
Abstract:
Visiting guest artist and teacher Mário Carreira gives a detailed overview of the 'romantic guitar'. Topics covered include: an explanation of tuning and stringing (from double strings to single strings); playing positions and period technique; composers; solo and chamber repertoire; guitar methods and bibliography.
Biography:
Mario Carreira specialises in romantic guitar and holds a teaching position at the Porto Conservatoire, Portugal. His special areas of interest include chamber music and repertoire for voice and guitar. Mário has studied at the National Conservatoire of Lisbon, the University of Évora (with Manuel Morais - a student of the late Emilio Pujol), and in France at the Conservatoire National de Caen with Louis-Marie Feuillet. He has also studied with many early music specialists including; the late Macario Santiago Kastner, Hopkinson Smith and Anner Bylsma. Mário specialises in the romantic guitar, in which he has worked and been in contact with: the late Robert Spencer, Manuel Morais, Jakob Lindberg, Dr.Thomas Heck and Dr. Brian Jeffery.
