Featuring Jenny Davey (solo cello), conductors Patrick Shepherd and Chris Reddington and works by Finzi, Boyce, Bloch, Reddington (new work), Burges, Purcell, Corelli.
Ernest Bloch’s beautiful triptych “From Jewish Life” forms the focal point of this concert. Melodic and harmonically rich, these works are brought to life by cellist Jenny Davey in arrangements for cello and strings by Patrick Shepherd. A native of Christchurch now resident in Akaroa, Jenny began her studies at the CSIM (as then was), and played with the Christchurch and New Zealand Youth Orchestras before going on to Victoria University to study music, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in cello performance. Jenny has given cello and chamber music recitals throughout New Zealand and England and has played in the Christchurch Symphony as well as broadcasting for Radio New Zealand. Jenny is a member of the Tresoli Piano Trio. She teaches cello at the Arts Centre and has a special interest in adult education.
The orchestra is also delighted to premiere a new work with Christchurch composer Chris Reddington’s Magnificat, to be conducted by the composer. This work explores the diverse expressive capabilities of the ensemble in an atmospheric and meditative way.
The concert also features gems from the string repertoire, namely the Romance by Finzi, Suite for Strings by Boyce, Suite in E minor by Burges, Fantasia by Purcell and Concerto Grosso Op. 6 no.4 by Corelli.
