The Good Karma Project (GKP), a multi-media youth-development project joining the art of Aotearoa with the creativity of refugee children from Burma.
Last December with the help of international charity, Children on The Edge, two Wellington volunteers, Pat Shepherd and Josh Bahlman, travelled to Mae Sot, Thailand where thousands of children have taken refuge to escape the instability of their homeland. For six weeks they worked with refugee children to strengthen their development by increasing the creativity in their daily lives. Living situations are desperate for these children, and for all of them, education is a privilege and art, an unknown experience.
GKP photography and art workshops allowed the children to create pieces of art that are being used as inspiration for a number of established, and up-and-coming Kiwi artists to create original works based on their interpretation of the children’s artwork.
All this work will feature in the exhibition at Toi Pōneke Gallery, Wellington, from the 1st–24th April. Featured artists include Misery, Drypnz, Mephisto Jones, Flox, Andy Shaw and more.
All proceeds from the auction and exhibition go directly back to the children, supplying them with crucial aid.
