In Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, the servant couple Figaro and Susanna want to be married, but their aristocratic employer Count Almaviva withholds permission, because he lusts after Susanna himself. After wonderfully convoluted plotting and counter-intrigue, the aristocrat is the loser in this battle of wits.
To produce an opera based on Beaumarchais' play was a huge, calculated risk for Mozart. Because of the controversial plot, the play was banned by the censor from performance in Vienna at the time. History has since proven The Marriage of Figaro as one of Mozart's greatest and most enduringly popular works.
