In August 2009 Alex Van Wel became the first journalist to fully embed with the New Zealand Defence Force in Afghanistan.

Alex went out on patrol into the volatile north east region of Bamiyan Province where the Provincial Reconstruction Team is based. In addition, he spent time at Bagram air-base, in the capital Kabul, and in the southern Kandahar region where fighting between the Taliban and international forces is most fierce.
