Dramatix Theatre Development Trust presents the third annual Lest We Forget ANZAC Comemmorative Weekend, April 24th and 25th 2010 at Nelson's Founders Park, from 10am daily.
There is a free Double Decker Bus running from Richmond to Nelson (turning opposite Auckland Point School) for the event, thanks to the generosity of NCC and Nelson Coachlines. Bus to Founders with soldiers off to war, nurses reporting for duty and other event 'characters'
2010’s emphasis will be on ‘Prisoners of War’ with new stories on the ‘The Nelson City Council Walls of Remembrance’, a specially built OfficeMax replica POW camp in the Energy Centre complete with escape attempts and patrolling guards.
The Nelson Pine Theatre will present two One-Act plays - Memento Mori by Nelson's TJ Ramsay, an award winning musical drama telling the story of a young couple's war experiences and Tent of War, the story of Bernie, shot down over Normandy and taken prisoner - written by his wife Marjorie Kemp-Baker of Blenheim.
The Cuts@once AGC street battle re-enactments will feature the take-over of our 'French' Village each morning, with the Allies liberation of 'La Ville de Founders' each afternoon - please do not pick up any shells or ammo casings after these events - for safety sake they must be collected and counted by the re-enactors after each dsiplay. Live (blank) ammunition is used and the re-enactments are very realistic and loud - earplugs will be offered while available.
The Ray White Home Front will offer tastings of war-time cookery, recipes and displays as well as light refreshments and news on how you can take part in an essay competition 'What does ANZAC Day mean to me' in 4 age groups starting at Primary through to 17+.
Ian Lyle and horse Dusty will be there with their Boer War display, you can watch children's evacuee re-enactments, see Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo skits, listen to period music and watch for patrolling soldiers checking 'papers'.
Dress up in period costume and have your family photo taken for $10 (posted to you) thanks to Andrea Seymour Photography.
There will be air-raids with smoke bombs and plane 'soundscapes', food, displays and more, all with the aim of helping us all to learn and discover what war meant to us as New Zealanders, the changes it wrought, how it shaped our nation, but most importantly, - To Remember.
Entry to Park events $2 all Ages, To the Nelson Pine Theatre $10 Friday 23rd 8pm, and then 2pm & 7pm during the event.
