Thousands of cups of coffee have been brewed around the Country over the past five weeks in a search to find the country’s best Barista to represent New Zealand at the World Championships. Fiercely contested regional heats in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland have found the nations top seven Baristas who will battle it out for the ultimate title of NZ Barista Champion and go on to represent New Zealand in London in June.

The finalists are:
Representing the South Island: The 2008 Champion Luciano Marcolino is back and Hideyuki Kono who came second in 2009.

Representing the Lower North Island: Matt Troughton and Nick Clark, who was the Wild Card entry in the 2009 final.

Representing the Upper North Island: David Huang who placed third in the 2009 competition and Kayoko Nakamura who is a new comer to the competition but has been practising every day for the past three months!

The judges have also selected Erin Luke from Wellington as the ‘Wild Card’ entrant whom they felt had a depth of understanding of her blend.

Judges are preparing for the Country’s biggest coffee showdown which takes place next Saturday, 17th April in Auckland. The action begins at 10am, when the first competitor will prepare three sets of espresso beverages. He or she will serve to each of the four sensory judges’ four espressos, four cappuccinos and four Signature Beverages in only 15 minutes.

The NZ Barista Champion will be announced on Saturday 17 April at 5pm. The event is open to the Public and is free.
