For those that don’t know, St George is the patron saint of England. He is typically identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry. According to legend, St George was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon to save a princess.
The anniversary of St George's death in 303 AD, which falls on 23rd April, is seen as England's 'National Day', and there are many campaigns in England to make it a national holiday.
The English are not the only ones that celebrate St George’s Day. Partying takes place in many other countries around the world, including Germany, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Russia, Slovenia, Italy, Lebanon, Malta and Albania.
St George’s Day celebrations have been running for a few years now in Auckland and we’ve seen people dress up as medieval knights, wear formal suits and red roses and wear the St George Flag. There was even a blow up dragon up for raffle one year.
This year, St Georges Day will be celebrated all week long in London:
