Stagecraft Theatre presents Wuthering Heights
Adapted for the stage by Jane Thornton, from the book by Emily Bronte.
Directed by Iona Anderson
“Why did you betray your own heart? You loved me –what right had you to leave me?”
Set against a single backdrop, six actors play out the drama of Catherine and Heathcliff’s passion for each other, of Edgar and Isabella whose unwitting kindness leads to betrayal, and of the children Cathy and Hareton – inextricably caught up in the aftermath of misunderstanding and loss.
In life Cathy and Heathcliff should never have been separated and, inconsolable with grief and rage after the two were parted, Heathcliff's need for revenge drives him to acts of inexplicable cruelty against those around him. It becomes apparent however, that rather than being simply vindictive, Heathcliff is a man tormented and haunted by ghosts
In her modern adaptation, Jane Thornton takes this enduring love story and makes it more accessible, paring it down it down to the raw bones ; yet her innovative approach loses none of the intensity, nor the beauty and depth of Emily Bronte’s work.
"As I read the script, I found myself completely drawn into the richness of the story...and I wanted to read and re-read it again , never 100% sure of how I felt about the characters and how they treat each other. There are moments of great hurt and anger, and moments of extraordinary tenderness and connection that make for really, really good theatre"
(Iona Anderson , director)
