Footnote Dance
Vector Wellington Orchestra has a reputation for appealing programming and distinctive artists and its September concert proves no exception. Who doesn’t love a tango, and just as the saying goes, Michael Houstoun is the perfect dance partner. Houstoun’s performances of Beethoven are legendary, and with the fourth piano concerto, arguably the most daring of its time, Beethoven breaks all the formulas and delivers pure beauty and expression for all time.
The concert takes its name, “Tangazo” from one of the sultry tangos of Astor Piazolla. A virtuoso bandoneon player known as Argentina’s King of Tango, Piazolla transformed an earthy, sensual dance into a sophisticated art form. Dancers from Footnote Dance will bring the spirit of tango to life as the orchestra leads Piazolla’s sinuous, persuasive melody through a set of gorgeously coloured variations. Listeners may find it hard to stay still as the rhythm of the tango takes hold!
The programme is rounded out with the spirited London symphony by Haydn, the father of the symphony. This year sees the commemoration of Haydn’s death 200 years ago, and Vector Wellington Orchestra plays tribute to Papa Haydn with this popular symphony No 104. An unforgettable programme, an unforgettable artist, and an unforgettable orchestra – come tango with us!
