NZSO | Cellist Gautier Capuçon performs Saint Saëns
Shostakovich’s lively Festive Overture, written at speed to open a 1954 Bolshoi concert, shows him at his most optimistic. Opening fanfares lead to a romping tussle between strings and woodwinds. “An artist who is not fully satisfied by elegant lines, harmonious colours and beautiful harmonic progressions has no understanding of art,” said Saint-Saëns. His vivacious cello concerto reflects his ideals. Bartók preferred to look beyond pretty surfaces. His 1943 Concerto for Orchestra combines vitality and colour with intellectual brilliance
