No 2 of the Maori Short Film Series, which is presented by Rotorua Museum and The New Zealand Film Commission, is a showing of two films directed by Taika Waititi. The first, Tama Tu, tells the story of young Maori Battalion soldiers who wait for night-fall in a war-torn Italian home. They keep themselves amused with jokes and laughter - only to be reminded by a tohu (sign) of the world of the dying. A karakia (prayer) unites their spirits before they head into the dark world of war. (18 minutes). The second, Two cars, one night, received a 2005 Academy Award nomination. Taika Waititi captures 'a moment of beauty in the ordinary'. Two boys and a girl wait for their parents in the carpark of a rural pub. Rivalry turns to friendship, proving that aroha (love) can be found in unlikely places. (11 minutes)
