The magnificent Dunedin Town Hall, acoustically one of New Zealand’s two top concert venues, will resound with the Southern Sinfonia, City of Dunedin Choir and four of New Zealand’s top soloists in a celebration of the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. Haydn’s wonderful Lord Nelson Mass will be performed at the Glory of Haydn concert on Saturday 12 September at 8.00 pm.
The concert’s conductor, prestigious Englishman Simon Over, is the initiator and Director of the London Southbank Sinfonia, one of the most exciting UK projects, which gives young player-graduates the opportunity of playing in the orchestra, providing them with a springboard into the profession.
Rebecca Ryan, Soprano; Claire Barton, Mezzo; James Rodgers, Tenor and Jared Holt, Baritone are young singers who continue to achieve outstanding results, both within New Zealand and overseas.
The other major work will be Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 – one of his best-known compositions which begins in a relaxed manner and progresses to a fast, brilliantly-orchestrated finale, with rushing strings and fiery brass.
The concert starts on a bright note with New Zealander Larry Pruden’s 1956 Dances of Brittany for String Orchestra.
Sinfonia will complete its 2009 season with The Glory of Haydn on a triumphant note.
