REGRETS? I’VE HAD A FEW . . . Honour, love, death and regret are the powerful themes of Tchaikovsky’s grand opera of ‘lyrical scenes’, as he described Eugene Onegin.

A little like a Russian Pride and Prejudice without the happy ending, it concerns an aristocratic but shy young woman called Tatyana who falls deeply in love with the distant and rather wordly Eugene Onegin, best mate and confidant of Lenski, who is Tatyana’s sister Olga’s suitor and a poet. Onegin’s cavalier rejection of Tatyana is a blow she can only hope to recover from, but Olga’s life is shaken to the core by Onegin’s new trick – a thoughtless act that will leave one man dead and the other dumbfounded by his own stubborn pride.

This knowledge of his own folly is not punishment enough: Onegin gets his comeuppance all right, but it is perhaps from the most unlikely source.

In her debut with The NBR New Zealand Opera rising star soprano Anna Leese will take the role of Tatyana alongside the UK’s William Dazeley, one of the leading baritones of his generation, in the title role.
