Wellington Photographic Society – An Oldie but a Goodie

The Wellington Photographic Society is 107 and is in better shape than ever. President Jenny O’Connor says “WPS may have been around for well over a 100 years but it is as vibrant and relevant today as it has ever been. This year has been a really great year for WPS – our membership is the highest it has been for many years and we are getting record attendances at our fortnightly members’ nights.”

Particularly pleasing is to see so many younger people joining. They bring with them a new perspective and energy that will ensure that WPS is around for another 100 years. “For some people, joining WPS has been the first step in a whole new direction and career (see Catherine Catternach, Grant Newton and Jenny O’Connor’s bios attached). For others it’s about learning to take good family photos that they feel good about. Then we have members who have been members for up to 40 years. The knowledge and experience of our ‘older’ members is a huge asset to the newer less experienced photographers who are just starting out.”

This year’s exhibition at the Michael Fowler Centre will showcase the range of styles and approaches of the members of WPS, from classic landscapes to pure abstraction. “The digital age has opened a world of endless creative possibilities” says Jenny. “It’s great to experiment and take an idea as far as you can - but it’s also good to know the basics -equipment is only a small part of the equation – no amount of equipment will replace a good eye for composition, an appreciation of how colours work together, balance, light and technical quality. We try to bring all those elements into the annual programme of events we offer each year.”

WPS is delighted to have two highly regarded professional photographers involved with the exhibition this year – Nick Servian will be casting his experienced and creative eye over the entries and announcing the final selections on the 13 October. And Robert Catto (editor of GRINZ) will be a great guest speaker at the opening on the 30 October.

We also acknowledge the generosity of the Wellington City Council for providing the Michael Fowler Centre to us, free of charge.
