10am winners floor talk in the gallery
11am Coffee and Symposium on the top floor of Lopdell House
Over the course of the day several key players in the ceramics/craft/education and funding community from around the country have been invited to "exchange" thoughts and ideas on the position of ceramics in New Zealand today. Come along and add your viewpoint to what is sure to be a day of stimulating discussion.
Session 1 The Present (11.15am - 12.15pm)
Where is NZ ceramic studio practice today?
Led by Scott Chamberlin, we will start this one-day symposium with Scott's impressions about the ceramic community at large, from jurying the Portage Awards and having a studio practice here for almost a year.
Panelists will endeavour to talk about acquiring expertise in studio practice: how does one acquire expertise for their studio practice? Acquire studio space and go to work? Form a cooperative studio space with like-minded practitioners?
Respondents: Brian Wood, Lauren Livingstone, Andy Kingston
Lunch 12.15pm - 1.30pm
Session 2 What Next? (1.30pm - 2.15pm)
What changes might be helpful for the future of the ceramic community? Are there ways in which the vessel makers and the sculptors see their work discussing similar ideas? How are ceramic practitioners learning about other ceramic art on an international scale?
Respondents: Richard Fahey, Trudie Kroef, Richard Stratton
Session 3 Criticality (2.15pm - 3.30pm)
In the ceramic community, is there vitality in the sharing of critical dialogue? What is the role of writing, publishing books/catalogues and sharing dialogue? Why are there more commentators/writers in the mainstream visual arts? Is intellectual lethargy common in the ceramic community?
Respondents: Kim Meek, Anna Miles, Grant Thompson
Tea break 3.30pm - 4pm
Session 4 Institutions and Organisations: how can they help? (4pm - 4.45pm)
How can studio practitioners engage with institutions and organisations? What are the responsibilities of organisations, exhibition spaces, etc. in regards to the practitioners and the creation of historical archives/evidence?
What about practitioners creating their own organisations/gallery spaces?
Respondents: Philip Clarke, Justine Olsen, Emma Ward
Book Launch
Cone Ten Down: Studio Pottery in New Zealand, 1945-1980 by Moyra Elliott and Damian Skinner
Please join us at the end of what will be a lively and stimulating day to celebrate the launch of a new book that will make a significant contribution to the critical dialogue of the history of ceramics in New Zealand.
