Most of Leila's current work depicts a magical world where illusion and reality blur. She would like to entice her audience into surrealistic ambiguity through the narrative of portrayed objects especially fruits as they have long been looked at as more than just a source of food, intertwined with with religion, life, sex and human nature. Her paintings are filled with double meaning. The viewer is first drawn in by the beauty of Leila's painting then later discovesr the darker elements of the image and narrative. The aim is to create a visual story, which only the spectator can complete with the use of their own intellect, sense of humour and imagination.
James Cattell grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, where the winters were cold and the family did not own a TV, so he spent most of the time in my room with his imagination writing and drawing and making models. Surrounded by books and objects that suggested piecemeal family history, he was also fascinated by the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Gothic reminiscences of grandparents. These images and half-remembered stories influenced my creations then and continue to inspire his work today.
“My range of ‘Wergelzings’ constitute easily transported and affordable artworks that hopefully will bring delight and amusement to their viewers. I had always hoped to be considered a very serious artist one day, but given the breadth of my projects and the importance I place on humour, perhaps I am destined to be remembered as an ‘outsider artist’.”
