Innocence. Wonder. Sex. Disillusion. Love. Resignation. Wisdom. Transcendence. The Journey is a live song and dance cycle that explores the human life span, from womb to tomb.
Conceived somewhere in the hills beyond Colyton two years ago, The Journey is performed by an seven-piece acoustic ensemble comprised of past and present Palmerstonians, including 2007 Chapman Tripp nominated composer Suzy Hawes (The Bowler Hat) , Percussionist Simon Loveday, singer-songwriter Jenny Loveday, saxophonist Mike Vallance, composer and guitarist Brad Jenkins, well known actress and singer Liz Kirkman and and long-time figure in Palmerston North music scene, bass player Rik Ellis.
The Journey’s songs, segues and dances reflect some of the moments, stages and phases that come and go between the cradle and the grave. They depict changes in our consciousness with the passage of time: childish discoveries, youthful confidence, a lover’s passion or ultimate disillusion, the search for meaning and faith in our presence here, mature reflection, with our path eventually bringing us back to our beginning.
Last year saw the ensemble recording at Braeburn Studios, assisted by a grant from The Palmerston North Arts Council. The resulting CD will be available for sale on the night. Drinks and gourmet nibbles will be for sale (cash only) at the Globe Bar in the foyer.
The natural narrative element of this music will be enhanced with the wonderful addition of “The Journey Dancers”-five dancers led by Maria Merrick and assisted by Karen Newton (both local dance artists) – enabling the audience to become more engaged in their own “Journey”.
Experience “The Journey”!
