Fitzcarraldo’s ‘Burden of Dreams’ (Cert PG)
Burden of Dreams is a feature-length documentary and making-of directed by Les Blank, shot during and about the chaotic production of Werner Herzog's 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, filmed in the jungles of South America.
Fitzcarradlo is an obsessed opera lover who wants to build an opera house in the jungle. To accomplish this he first has to make a fortune in the rubber business, and his cunning plan involves hauling an enormous river boat across a small mountain with aid from the local Indians. A Classic film from Director Les Blank, although it has been years since I have seen ‘Burden of Dreams’, this movie has always remained etched in my memory as one of the greatest documentaries ever about the making of a film (Fitzcarraldo). The Film never ends to fascinate. It is almost as if the director wants the progression of time to happen in real time. The film depicts the insanity of Herzog's obsessive film making with passion and understanding. An absolute must see.
