The Trust is delighted to have the husband and wife team of Rob and Sonia Waddell as guest speakers. Rob has had a very exciting sporting career as a New Zealand rower, yachtsman and rugby union player. Waddell has one of the highest VO2 max intake levels of any athlete ever tested. He holds the fastest 2000 meter indoor rowing machine time in the world, clocking a time of 5mins 36.6secs. He is also a 3 time Supreme Halberg Award winner after being 1998 and 1999 World Champion and Olympic Champion in 2000. In 2001 he took on a new challenge as grinder for Team NZ. In 2008 he announced his return to world rowing after over 7 years away from the sport. He was selected for the double sculls in Beijing and has recently undergone surgery to correct his heart condition.
In 1998, he married fellow rower Sonia. At the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics Sonia competed in the single sculls, placing sixth and fifth, respectively. She won a silver medal in the 2001 World Rowing championships in the quadruple sculls. She retired from rowing in 2004 but in 2008 Sonia made a sporting comeback but in cycling as she felt her sports career should not be over just because she had three children.
