‘Aerial Manoeuvres' by Katherine Simpson 22/10/09 - 10/11/09, opening with a preview from 6pm 22/10/09
The exhibition is a description of the contemplative nature of the artist as she reflects her emotional status.
The blocks of colour reflect peace, while other areas allude to compulsory interactions. The tension in the built space and the calm objective negative space allow the subjects to converse.
Simpson's interest in deconstruction is evident and relates to her involvement in the breakdown of one's physical environment. There is a certain amount of distress when a subject or area is erased. She believes that ‘we do not exist as separate objects. We are involved in a constant source (of) free movement, information and deconstruction'.
Harsh scribed lines often fall over less confident objects, suggesting a play of emotions between the subjects. The layering of paint form very necessary areas which are dissolved with indents from previous structures.
'The abstraction is often the most definite form for the intangible thing in myself that I can clarify in paint' Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 - 1986)
From an aerial perspective, points in space highlight different areas of intensity, very little is left hidden. It is comparative to the interior landscape of dream, imagination and memory. When paired with natures own physical environment it provides very valuable tools.
Some manoeuvre around and creep up on each other, sometimes unexpectedly, and provocatively.
