Think about the 1970's and orange and brown interiors and bellbottoms spring quickly to mind. But what were New Zealand artists painting and thinking about? Snapshot: 1970's New Zealand Painting delves into the wealth of 1970's New Zealand painting in the art collection of Te Manawa, Palmerston North, to present a glimpse into some of the concerns and practices of artists painting in New Zealand in the 70's.

In the 1970's, the then Manawatu Art Gallery was particularly active in collecting the work of contemporary New Zealand artists and this exhibition showcases a selection of paintings from the era by key figures in New Zealand art. Don Driver and Ralph Hotere’s large scale abstract paintings, Philip Clairmont’s dazzling triptych depicting the staircase of his Wellington flat, Robert Ellis’s strangling urban motorway and Buck Nin’s abstracted kowhaiwhai are some of the highlights and indicate the range of approaches and concerns of the decade.
