Hailing originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, Tim O'Brien is one of the most respected bluegrass musicians and song writers performing around the world today. Since co-founding Hot Rize in 1978, he has recorded and played with the top names in Americana music, including Steve Earle, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Nickel Creek, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Mary Chapin Carpenter, along with international acts such as the Chieftans, Paul Brady, Lunasa, Solas and Grᤡ.
His latest project was playing and touring with bluegrass banjo player (and actor) Steve Martin. As well as having "one of the most fluid and recognizable voices in Bluegrass", O'Brien is also a virtuoso player on the Mandolin, Guitar, Fiddle, Banjo and Bazouki. His songs have been recorded by the Dixie Chicks and Garth Brooks as well as scores of bands around America. Tim served as president of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) from 2001 through 2003. After several nominations, he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk in 2005 for his album "Fiddler's Green". In both 1993 and 2006 he was awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association's Male Vocalist of the Year Award. O'Brien will be joined on his first tour to New Zealand, by Trevor Hutchinson (Lunasa, The Waterboys, Eric Bibb) on double bass and Gerry Paul (Grᤡ) on guitar and will be singing and playing sing a mixture of his self penned and Americana favourites.
