Tres Cordes, consisting of Cathy Irons (violin), Sophie Buxton (viola) and Tomas Hurnik (cello) will play beautiful light and uplifting string trios by Haydn, Boccherini and Polish composer Kleczynski (his music sounds like Mozart's). It is the opening concert to the Great Hall lunchtime series.
This ensemble of players is inspired by the name Tres Cordes. The word is French, literally meaning “three strings”. Each trio player brings with them the unique colour of their stringed instrument – the violin, viola and cello to blend as a unified whole..
In piano music, the term means to release the soft pedal, allowing the hammers to play on all the strings belonging to each note, creating a full, rich tone. Tres Cordes brings music to life with warmth, life and beauty.
Cathy, Sophie and Tomas are all members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. They share a common passion for chamber music. Tomas, with his European experience and knowledge of period music brings direction to the group in recreating the style of the early to late classical music in Thursday's programme.
