Birds of Paradise is a new cabaret company, serving up a unique, flamboyant and feathery feast, in the form of a Cabaret Burlesque Comedy.

Weaving dance, drama, and comedy into a most stupendous menagerie. This will be an unforgettable evening, filled with exquisitely ornate, humorous, and delightfully sensual creatures.

BIrds of Paradise - the show, is directed, choreographed and designed by Morag Magnolia Brownlie (Wearable Arts Awards , Sky City New Years Eve, Dance of the Diggers, The Passage). Acclaimed performers on the show include the notorious Mika, musicians Sean J Donnelly, Georgia Wood, Henry Taripo, actor/comedian Jonathen Brugh and Luke Devery. Delicious dancers include Georgie Goater, Naressa Gamble, Seonade Lyons, Mike Holland, Leda Petit (Sunday only), members of Pasifika Sway and Cuban groove dance company. Some tease, some taunt, some startle with their voice and some have other special abilities.

The ornate wardrobe designed by Morag includes items from international and local designers. Featuring Trelise Cooper, Brooke Tyson, World, Issey Miyake ranges, Flo Foxworthy, Missy Millner , and Sensorie.

Frances Melhop, voted one of the top 200 photographers in the world 08 is a collaborator on the stunning imagery for Birds of Paradise.

This show is about birds and their feathers. But more, it is about paradise. The best place to find paradise is in the spaces and moments between two, bird or human, two humming with chemistry and love. This show plays with the rituals that can bring them together and celebrates the courtship driven, attention-seeking performances of some bizarre and alluring creatures.

Organisers are asking the audience to dress with style. Arrive adorned with a fascinator hat or feathery cravat, and you may be in for a treat.

With this intimate and luscious evening you can experience exquisite food in the form of a feathery feast (dinner from 6.00pm book at the venue), delicious cocktails , and a hilarious and glamorous show.

Review by Celine Sumic Theatreview 27 Oct 2009 Theatreview
AN INSPIRING, MINDFUL WORK OF INTERNATIONAL CLASS

"Fashioned from top local talent and delivered with choreographer Morag Magnolia Brownlie’s characteristic humour and sensitivity, the disarmingly beautiful Birds of Paradise are a unique blend of feathery fantasy and environmental fairy tale.

Woven together with a thread of vocal gold, this unusual show features an outstanding mix of live and recorded sound...
.... there is an otherworldly quality to this work that reminds me of Wim Wender’s Wings of Desire.

An intellectual work gracefully wrapped in the playful cellophane of fantasy, Birds of Paradise .... raises questions of gender identity and ecological concerns with embodied expressions of both human and ornithological courtship.
Of global appeal with an outstanding use of sound and costume and the integration of themesof identity, femininity and
environmental .... One of the best shows I’ve seen this yea

Excellent writing. I personally didn't go but your review is very objectively written.

    Entertain Me 2 years ago

We went to the show at Ascension on Saturday night and had high expectations after being on the beautiful Birds of Paradise website. Unfortunately while the costumes were quite spectacular, the show as a whole was disappointing and certainly not worth the $55 that they are charging for tickets.

The concept was original and certainly has potential, but the execution lacked cohesion, reason and polish. The dancers were out of time, the singers were out of key, and those mouthing the songs didn't seem to know the words! The David Attenborough narrative which was supposed to be the glue tying each skit together was both tired and poorly written. Nobody would know who David Attenborough is if his scripts were that lacking.

Margot Magnolia Brownlie did a good job of trying to hold the show together and her Mrs Mmmmm character was entertaining and charming, but was not enough to carry the rest of the show, that would curiously clank from The Piano score to a disco hit and then to Beyonce.
