A rare and beautiful collection of bone and pounamu carvings by New Zealand artists from Whangarei in the north to Queenstown in the south. They are a mix of well-known artists whose work is known worldwide, as well as up and coming, new artists who bring fresh ideas, methods, materials and often a contemporary twist to an ancient craft. All are passionate about their work and their respective cultures – every piece has a special meaning and story behind its creation. Each artist brings their own interpretation and style to the craft and each tends to specialize in a different aspect of the art or a different material. Some work in pounamu or stone, others in deer antler or bone and some in more modern materials such as corian or perspex.

Opened by Mayor Len Brown Thursday 29 October 6.30pm

Bone carving demonstrations in the gallery by Don Campbell 7 and 11 November 12 - 2pm and Traditional binding and cordage technique demonstrations 4,6,10 and 12 Nov 12 - 1pm.

This exhibition is part of the Manukau Festival of Arts.
