Marti Friedlander (born 1928) has been taking photographs for over fifty years – in England, Europe and Israel first, before landing in New Zealand in 1958. Here she is one of our best-known photographers, while in recent years her work has been attracting increasingly enthusiastic attention in Europe, USA and Australia.
Yet most of her photographs are either un-published or little-known. This exhibition and book address that situation by making public many hitherto unseen or rarely seen images. Both exhibition and book offer a new look at Marti Friedlander’s work in its diversity of subject and geographical or cultural scope; portraits, architecture, street photographs, socio-political events, the beach, migration and travel, self-picturings.
Marti Friedlander sees sharply. She has said, ‘I take pictures because I have to’. Her views are astute. Her images are never formulaic or predictable. They can have an edge. They also enable us to see afresh.
