An exhibition of paintings by Rona Ngahuia Osborne is being held at Auckland's The Lane Gallery.
Rona Ngahuia Osbourne’s paintings draw on the existence of the wild and untamed landscapes that once existed in Aotearoa (New Zealand). More than 70 million years of physical isolation preserved it from human interferance, like no other land mass on earth.
New Zealand was a home to some of the oldest species plant life and animals, Rona's paintings consider nga morehua, the survivors of this time – their existence is something to wonder at. They are like the huia or kokako, vanished or dwindling, like the un-dead; ghosts in this haunted landscape.
Rona applies her fine arts degree to her strong interpretation of heritage created with a modern approach to painting. Rona Ngahuia Osborne grew up in the Hokianga and shares Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Maori heritage.
Haunted Landscapes opens at The Lane Gallery on Tuesday 20 October, and continues until Saturday 7 November. The gallery is open from Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday from
10am to 4pm.
