The Great Ape Race

With our friends from Lactic Turkey Events, the Auckland Zoo brings you The Great Ape Race - a fun navigation event with a difference, that’s raising funds for orangutan conservation.

The “Amazing Race” like event is a chance for you and your family, or friends or workmates to get a team together for an amazing around-the-world race at the zoo - no experience required, just a commitment to team work!

The 30-minute race for business/work teams and 45 minute race for family/social teams will get your heart pumping, your legs racing and push your brain into over-drive as you strategise to work out the fastest way to reach a number of destinations throughout the zoo, answer questions correctly, and make it back to the Band Rotunda within the time limit.

There are great prize packs up for grabs and spot prizes to be won.

Having worked up an appetite, there will also be barbecue food and other apetising refreshments available for purchase.

Every participant gets a race pack with their individual race number, goodies, and all other necessary information. Just before the teams start, they will be given a map (thanks to the Auckland Orienteering Club) with all the destinations and a clue sheet. The event will make use of a special electronic timing chip, so race organisers can accurately track your performance - and keep you honest!

The cost to enter is $25 for adults and $10 for children (no Friends of the Zoo discount).

The race is on to save the critically endangered orangutan from extinction - and all profits from this Great Ape Race will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund to support the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).

The rain date is Friday 13 November.
