Wellington Youth Orchestra gives three main concerts each year.

The next concert is on Monday 2 November at Wellington Town Hall, where the orchestra will be performing Shostakovich Festive Overture, Tchaikovsky Symphony No 6 "Pathetique" and the Sibelius Violin Concerto with soloist Chikako Sasaki.

Chikako Sasaki began violin lessons in Japan through the Suzuki Method at the age of 3 with Yoko Tanaka. In 2003, she travelled to France for master classes with Yukari Tate, professor at the Municipal Academy of Music, Paris. She was concertmaster of the Koriyama Junior Philharmonic Orchestra and her school, Koriyama 2nd Junior High School’s orchestra, which won the TBS National Youth Music Competition.

Chikako moved to New Zealand in May 2007 and continued her violin study with Emma Barron, and more recently Vesa-Matti Leppänen, concertmaster for the NZSO. In 2008, Chikako was a soloist with the Manawatu Sinfonia performing the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3, and the Michael Monaghan Foundation Young Artists Concert in 2007 and 2009. Chikako attended the Queenstown Violin Summer School in 2008 and 2009 where she studied intensively with artists such as Eyal Kless, professor at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. In August this year Chikako attended the Universtat Mozarteum Summer Music Academy in Salzburg where she studied with Eyal Kless and Yair Kless, professor at the Graz University.

She has been a member of the WYO since 2007, and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra since 2008.
