This quirky comedy, written by Amy Freed, is directed for Stagecraft Theatre by Robert Hickey.
Honest, appealing country bumpkin, Will 'Shakspere', leaves his shrewish wife in Stratford-on-Avon to pursue an acting career in London. He is given the patronage of the wicked, charming, sexy Earl of Oxford who happens to be a closet playwright. He cannot put his own name on his plays so he seeks a mask...a beard...and he isn't the only closet playwright in London!
In a style that marries "Shakespeare in Love" with "Blackadder', playwright Amy Freed dares to tackle the perennial who-wrote-Shakespeare's -plays debate and succeeds magnificently.
A hilarious and fitting end to the New Zealand-wide Shakespeare Compleate Workes festival, 'The Beard of Avon" is the perfect way to wind down to Christmas.
