On Sunday 1 November the Museum of Wellington City & Sea invites visitors to experience an important part of Latin American and particularly Mexican culture with the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos or the Day of the Dead – where life is celebrated by honouring the dead.
Visitors to the Museum will be able to add personal items, such as photographs and poems, to a community altar adorned with marigold flowers in order to honour a loved one. These altars are built with the cultural belief that spirits briefly return to earth in order to maintain a connection with the living and re-experience the sensory world. And if you can’t make it on the Sunday don’t worry – the community altar will remain up for the rest of the week so you will still have the chance to contribute your items.
From 4pm, kids and adults alike can get their faces painted in preparation for the Day of the Dead parade through the streets of Wellington. This fun and festive procession commences at 6pm at the Museum and continues on to Trade Aid, Flying Burrito Brothers and Bar Bodega. Here visitors can stay on to enjoy the Day of the Dead Celebrations where such music acts as Bella Cajon, Café Tango, and Julie Bevan will be performing amongst colourful mariachi and dancers. The concert begins at 7.30pm with proceeds from the $10 admission charge supporting Zapatista communities.
This day promises to be a vibrant and fun-filled example of diverse local communities so come down to the Museum of Wellington City & Sea and help us celebrate this unique event.
