On Saturday November 28th at 6pm, Wellington’s Orpheus Choir kicks off the 2009 pre-Christmas festivities at the Wellington Town Hall with a lively and entertaining programme of songs from American composer and songwriter Cole Porter. This long awaited concert is set to thrill those wanting to spend an evening rekindling their memories, an evening of pure auditory indulgence, and an evening of schmaltz.

Cole Porter began to gain popularity for his songs soon after World War 1 and since then they have been much-loved by generations of music fans. Many have been immortalised by such famous singers as Ethel Mermann, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth. When Cole Porter was at his best in the 30’s and 40’s, he was the greatest artist of the New York and Hollywood set.

Let’s do it, I’ve got you under my skin, Night and Day, Begin the Beguine, From this moment on, and Just one of those things are a few of Porter’s most-loved songs and are sure to captivate our audience with his sardonic view of contemporary1930’s manners, his witty references, clever rhyming and foot-tapping syncopation.

And who better to deliver this scintillating, sumptuous evening of music but the Orpheus Choir, who in a recent concert were credited for singing with ‘razor-sharp ensemble and diction’. Conducted by talented Musical Director Michael Fulcher, they are joined by baritone Chris Crowe and mezzo-soprano Sarah Lineham and players from the Vector Wellington Orchestra. Master jazzman Wayne Senior, known
throughout the jazz and musical theatre world in this country, has created stunning arrangements of the great American Songbook for this evening’s performance.

Chris Crowe, based in Wellington, has made musical theatre his genre with a range of productions from Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar and Grease. He recently stepped in at late notice to take the lead role in Miss Saigon for Regent on Broadway, Palmerston North.

Sarah Lineham, another local talent is well-known to and much-loved by Wellington audiences for her ‘sweet and musical voice’ and ‘beautifully shaped lines’. She has had recent success in opera as well as musical theatre.

The 6pm start will allow Wellingtonians to continue enjoying their evening afterwards with all that our vibrant and exciting city offers.
