Keen for a family adventure that involves splendid waterfalls, impressive dams, high bridges and a meander through five historic tunnels (bring your torch!) in the picturesque Waitakere Ranges? Oh, and did we mention there will be a sausage sizzle and cake stall?

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the annual Oxfam Water for Survival Nihotupu Tramline Walk. Held on Sunday 22 November from 8.30am – 1.30pm, the 6km walk follows part of the ‘Rainforest Express’ tramline from the Upper Nihotupu Dam. It is the only day of the year that the trail is open to the public, so pack a picnic and bring your friends and family along, rain or shine.

For Aucklanders, the walk is a mere stroll in the park, but for developing countries, it is a small yet important contribution towards saving thousands of lives. Money raised from the admission fee ($7.50 per adult, $2.50 per child, or pre-purchase a family pass online for $15; x2 adults and x2 children), is used to assist water sanitation programmes in some of the world’s poorest and drought-stricken countries, helping to prevent waterborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and dysentery.

International environmental and engineering consultancy Tonkin & Taylor are this year exclusively sponsoring the event. They are a foundation member of Oxfam’s Water for Survival programme which works to help developing communities overcome poverty through improving their access to fresh, clean water and sanitation.

Park your car at Oratia School and jump on one of the free buses which will be running continuously from 8.30am through to 1.30pm. You will be dropped off at the beginning of the walk and picked up again at the end.
