'Pulling, Shaking, Squeezing, Spinning' [2008]
Data Projectors, DVD Players
dimensions variable

Katie Theunissen’s moving image and sound installation uses the simplest of methods and materials to explore naturally occurring tensions and forces. In a coalescence of actions, jerking bags of powder, tumbling rolls of bandage, shaking socks, and spinning testicular forms, which alone are unremarkable, behave in ways we are not familiar with. Dusty things float loose and fall gently, backlit, in powdery plumes. Clay things are kicked back and forth until they disappear. Thick things unearth boorishly when tugged. In stage-like set-ups, one is captivated by the dramatic use of light sound and movement as continuous processes unfold. Like watching documentary footage of a landslide or a sunrise, Katie’s videos are experiential. Carried out in her immediate surroundings they are made on an intuitive level and in some way pursue the unpredictable and enigmatic nature of beauty.

Katie Theunissen graduated with BFA Honours at Elam in 2008. Since then she has exhibited in Elam Upfront as part of the Auckland Festival and she is working
towards future exhibitions showing video work.
