Art + Sudoku = Artdoku

Back by popular demand!

Art and logic combine in an exciting art exhibition at K’Road’s Te Karanga Gallery from November 30 to December 11.

Artist Juliet Monaghan has created a series of interactive artworks based on the number puzzle sudoku and says sudoku fans can complete the paintings really quickly however there are easy works for beginners as well.

The exhibition has had one season already at Artstation Gallery in Ponsonby and its success, along with funding from the Creative Communities Scheme from Auckland City and Creative New Zealand, has made it possible for the exhibition to be shown again.

Artdoku references art movements such as geometric abstraction. Ideas of pattern making, colour, abstraction, logic and mathematics are also explored.

In Artdoku, the numbers 1-9, as used in sudoku, are translated into nine different colours. The rules are simple: each vertical and horizontal line of the painting must have one each of the nine different colours, as well as each 3 x 3 square.

Paint and canvas are replaced with coloured vinyl magnetic squares and a magnetic support. The vinyl squares can be easily moved on and off the support.

Gallery visitors can complete the Artdoku paintings and take part in the constantly evolving exhibition. Artdoku works are suitable for individuals and groups to use. “With Christmas approaching it’s an ideal opportunity to come along with a few friends or colleagues and have some fun,” says Ms Monaghan.
“I‘ve hosted the exhibition at workplaces and with community groups and it has proved to be a very stimulating team building exercise.”

“While this exhibition invites individuals and groups to create paintings based on rules of sudoku there is always a chance visitors may rebel and make up their own paintings!”

Ms Monaghan says Te Karanga Gallery is a great spot as it has the delightful Tea Culture Tea Shop alongside the gallery, so people can enjoy a cuppa at the same time.
