Courting trouble . . . The Italian Girl in Algiers is a spicy brew in which many forces are at work – the battle of the sexes, the clash of cultures and the strict societal code of the times just for starters.

Rossini liked his women strong and feisty: here, the young and sassy Isabella is separated from her lover Lindoro after their ship is plundered by pirates. But Lindoro’s life is complicated enough already. His master in the Algerian court, the bey Mustafà is bored with his wife Elvira and fancies the idea of an Italian woman heading up his harem. And now the fun really begins.

New Zealand-born, London-based mezzo soprano Wendy Dawn Thompson is returning to sing Isabella and Colin McColl, the Auckland Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, is filling the director’s chair.

Sung in Italian with English Surtitles.

Opera in two Acts by Gioacchino Rossini.

With members of the Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus
Accompanied by the Vector Wellington Orchestra.

It's not really a battle - just different ways of expressing what we feel or believe. Like magnets with their different poles, the attraction is in being different.

Interesting how this theme comes up again and again - it seems to come and go in waves at the moment it is 'up' again, same with the discussion about feminism. Anyway, there certainly are differences between men and women, and most of them make life very interesting. Some of the 'battle-talk' is only taking on cliches, though - there are brave men and women, lazy women and men etc etc it all depends on the individuum.

As Henry Kissinger says nobody will ever win the Battle of the Sexes: there's just too much fraternizing with the enemy. Longer truces can be negotiated when guys listen to what's not being said and gals listen to what is actually said. But hey who's complaining. It makes life interesting.

I find the battle of the sexes jokes to be very amusing. The man's guide to english for example is interesting to say the least - here's a wee snippet of what I know (yes, from experience lol): We need to talk = I need to complain. Sure... go ahead = I don't want you to. I'm not yelling! = Yes I am yelling because I think this is important. We need = I want. Do what you want = You'll pay for this later. I'm not upset = Of course I'm upset, you moron!

    Battle of Sexes

    Back in times
    Eve wasn't wise
    and Adam was sure
    he was smarter and pure.

    But later in years
    Men got their fears
    They drink and they eat
and they know how to cheat.

    Ladies unfortunately
    know what they worth
    so any break up
    will look as a loss.

    Man is stronger
    in body and mind
    But the way women love
    is one of its kind.

    Imagine if world
    had more than 2 kinds?
    The battle won't stop
till the end of the time.

    Battle of sexes
    is ultimate challenge
    But without each other
    we won't ever manage...
    to live.
