The Paihia Matariki Festival is in its 6th year. As well as the centerpiece art exhibition showcasing Northland Art there will be 5 workshops, which are great to participate in but also a lot of fun to watch. The exhibition of fine art will showcase paintings, sculpture, glass, weaving and carving from established Artists in the Bay of Islands and Far North. Open Sat 30th and Sunday 31st 10am to 5pm, Monday 1st 10am to 3pm. No entry free, all welcome.

Gala Opening Friday 29th 5.30pm, a sneak preview of the art for sale. Entertainment, refreshments and nibbles. Open to all at no charge.

Maori Kite Making Workshop - Sat 30 May
Harko Brown takes you on the inspirational journey of Kite Making - you will make three kites. This workshop has been very successful the past few years, and books out quickly. You will make a small raupo birdman kite (with face mask), plus the larger nikau wahine kite and the smaller bird kite from harakeke. All materials are included. An ideal workshop for adults. Kete Weaving Workshop - Sunday 31 May
Kete Weaving with Bronnie Harford. Bronnie Harford is a skilled teacher of weaving in harakeke and is back by popular demand. Using flax you will weave your own kete in a day. Easy for beginners and a great introduction to weaving with harakeke. All materials supplied. Contact Bronnie to book 021 718 506. Bookings essential for this small and personal workshop. $80 pp. 9am to 4pm.

Maori Indoor Games Workshop - Sunday 31 May
Mu torere, Poi toa and Ti Uru. From this workshop each person would get a poi toa and mu torere board to take home also.
All Materials supplied. Limited numbers to book phone Steph 09 402 5593 or email godsiff@xnet.co.nz. Cost $20pp. 1pm to 4pm, Mu torere, is great fun activity. Stimulating board game used extensively in mathematics programmes in NZ and up to PhD level at St.Johns University U.S.A. One of only 2 board games commonly known to have been played by ancient Maori, the other being kurapakara. Both games were developed by ancient tribes to celebrate the Matariki constellation, and other celestial bodies, on papa takaro games boards. Ti-Uru, is a high activity game with lots of interactive team work required and the skills of passing and catching a ti cabbage tree baton called a rakau to ure. On the east coast the game is known as Ti Uru baton from the West and on the Westcoast of the North Island as Turu i exciting baton game. Poi toa, It is common knowledge that poi used in kapa haka today originated from poi toa warrior poi. These were used extensively in games and disciplines to sharpen the reflexes of its users and to condition them for warfare. One of the most popular ancient poi toa games, called horohopu quick catch will be played in this session.

'Horewai' Kite Making Workshop - Sunday 31 May
A one hour workshop making the horewai kite with contemporary materials great for kids with parent help. This new workshop is run by Harko Brown, numbers are limited. $10 pp. Contact Steph 09 402 5593 or email godsiff@xnet.co.nz. All Materials supplied

Lantern Making Workshop - Monday 1 June
Local photographer Jenny Baker will show you how to create your own lantern for Matariki, using natural and man made materials. Suitable for all ages from about 6yrs upwards. People can work in pairs or individually to create their own masterpiece. An easy project that can be made as simple or as elaborate as you make it. The basic lantern should take no more than 2hrs to complete. Material supplied and plain tissue paper is provided, but if you want to bring coloured tissue paper to help individualise your lantern, please do. Cost $20 pp, $30 adult and child.
