The Demon Barber of Fleet Street . . . a musical thriller.

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Director - Alex Gilchrist.
Musical Director - Darlene Mohekey.

Showing 1 May - 23 May 2009.

Levin Performing Arts Society Inc invites you to join us for another entertainment experience.

This extraordinary piece of musical theatre is the most exciting production the Society has mounted in decades. This musical enjoys revivals in every major city around the world every year. The two leading characters Sweeney Todd the “demon barber” and Mrs Lovett “the pie shop proprietress” have been played by many huge stars, most notable and critically acclaimed being that, ‘you either love her or hate her’ ‘Angela Lansbury’ “Murder She Wrote’ and the lead in countless other movie and TV shows.

The Society has had feed back from regular theatre goers that: after seeing the Johnny Depp movie version which was so heavy and bloodthirsty, they weren’t sure about seeing it on stage. Let me assure you the stage show is not as heavy as the ‘movie’. Yes it’s the same basic story. A tale of Passion Obsession Destruction but Messrs Sondheim and Wheeler take us on a wonderful theatrical journey filled with exciting music, laughter, tears and romance.

The tale of Sweeney Todd is about how pure and noble love when tainted with evil can become obsessive and finally end in destruction. Heavy no just ‘life’.

The Sweeney Todd cast is led by Julian White as Sweeney Todd and Stephanie Greenslade as Mrs Lovett with romantic leads played by Baji Brown, who makes a welcome long awaited return to the stage and a young newcomer to our ranks Toni Gibson with a voice which thrills. The villains are Chris Craddock (Footrot Flats) and Cliff Thompson (Rent). A very strong ensemble supports the principals and a guest appearance by Jan Jackson in the extremely complex role of ‘Beggar Woman’.

This production is a must please continue your support of L.P.A.S and make a booking/group booking now by phoning Fleur on (06) 367 3404.

Group discounts available.

Fully licensed bar available - no BYO.

Tickets for the general public open on 1 April 2009 at our booking office, Bernina Sewing Centre, Oxford Street Levin. Cash or cheque only.

Sweeney Todd will not disappoint you visually or musically. Our now highly experienced production team has worked hard to give you set, costumes, properties, meals and a show that will hopefully leave you saying “gosh we really can pull it off here in Levin.”
