Octavian Nothing and Paul Faustino are the alter-egos of M.T. Anderson and Mal Peet respectively – both return in new adventures in newly published books. In Volume 1 of The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing our hero was part of an 18th-century experiment to calculate the intelligence of the African race. The Guardian reviewer wrote it ‘portrays an ugly reality in the way a young adult could understand.’ In Volume 2, Octavian has escaped to Boston and signs up to the Royal Ethiopian Regiment. Peet’s Paul Faustino, a world-weary sports journalist, returns in Exposure – this time as an observer of an Othello-like re-enactment in the shape of a football star and his celebrity singer wife. Times Online say “clever, funny, moving and superbly well written.” In conversation with our own YA writer extraordinaire, Kate De Goldi.
