Poet, raconteur and heritage librarian, Iain Sharp’s last foray into non-fiction was his immensely popular account of the taonga held in Auckland City Library. His new book looks at Charles Heaphy, the colonial artist. Beautifully written and illustrated, Sharp shakes down Heaphy so he emerges afresh as an adventurer and decorated soldier, the first recipient of New Zealand’s Victoria Cross. But ultimately Heaphy was a disappointed man – his longed-for recognition in Europe as a painter never came to pass. Fantastic visual explorer of our weird condition, his iconic images of New Zealand landscape remain fresh and powerful. An illustrated talk, introduced by Peter Wells.
